Activity Synopsis: The unit opens with a review of the Five Food Groups. Students read a mystery story that reviews the food groups and introduces two fourth-grade characters, Arianna Bones and her sidekick, Marcus Muscleman. After discussing the story, students scan it again to find examples of homophones and wordplays. Each student begins a Nutrition Journal.

They complete a map summarizing the key information in the story and make another Nutrition Journal entry.

Activity Synopsis: After reviewing the health benefits and key nutrients of the Five Food Groups with a game, students read and interpret nutrient bar charts to better understand that food groups are nutrient-based and to learn more about the "Others" category. In small groups, they solve nutrient case studies involving scientists in Antarctica and respond to several writing prompts in their Nutrition Journals.

They also learn that the recommended serving numbers are guidelines to help them get the nutrients they need for growth, feeling good and performing at their best, and they practice classifying foods.

Activity Synopsis: After sequencing parts of a friendly letter, students use the letter's information to create a chart of Arianna's food choices and graph the servings she ate from each food group. They assess her diet and make suggestions to ensure she eats the recommended servings from each food group. In a cooperative activity, students create a day's worth of meals and snacks for Arianna that provide the recommended servings from each of the Five Food Groups.

Activity Synopsis: Throughout the activity, students hear excerpts from Arianna's journal relating the discovery of a mysterious "Combination Cookbook." After discovering what a Combination Food is, students draw one from the bottom up and learn that Combination Foods are good sources of nutrients and provide many health benefits. The class brainstorms and uses a Combination Foods list to identify four recipes in the cookbook.

In a pre-writing brainstorm, students generate ideas for completing the adventure and individually write a story ending from either Arianna's or Marcus's point of view.
